Common Running Injuries and How Physio Can Help HBF Physio

Running is one of the easiest ways to stay active, but it does not always go to plan

Whether you are preparing for your first 5km or training for a marathon, running can be tough on your body. Without the right preparation and support, it is easy to pick up an injury that interrupts your progress.

At HBF Physio, we regularly help runners recover from injuries and return to movement with confidence. Here are some of the most common issues we see and how physiotherapy can help.

Common Running Injuries

Runner’s Knee (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome)
Dull aching pain at the front of the knee, often caused by poor alignment or muscle imbalance.

Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
Aching or tenderness along the shin, typically brought on by increasing training too quickly.

Achilles Tendinopathy
Stiffness or soreness in the Achilles tendon, often worse in the morning or during exercise.

Plantar Fasciitis
Sharp heel pain, especially during the first few steps in the morning.

ITB Syndrome (Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome)
Pain on the outer part of the knee, often caused by repetitive movement and tightness around the hip or thigh.

Stress Fractures
Small cracks in bones from repeated stress, common in the foot, shin or hip.

Why Do These Injuries Happen?

Most running injuries develop gradually. Some of the most common causes include:

• Rapid increases in training intensity or volume
• Poor posture or technique
• Muscle tightness or weakness
• Not enough rest between sessions
• Wearing unsupportive or worn-out shoes

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy is not just about treating pain. It is about finding the underlying cause and helping you recover in a way that supports your long-term health.

When you visit HBF Physio, your physiotherapist will:

• Assess how you move and identify any contributing factors
• Use hands-on treatment to improve mobility and reduce discomfort
• Provide tailored exercises to strengthen and stabilise your body
• Help you gradually return to running with guidance on pace and progress
• Give you advice on footwear and running technique

We focus on building confidence through movement and helping you stay active without ongoing pain.
